Larry said it was impossible to find true silence, Charlie knew this better than most people. With the constant onslaught of numbers into his head it was easy to lose himself in the noise, but at that moment it was still. Still and quiet but for the soft, steady rhythm from the EKG.
“I always knew you were ok Colby…” Charlie said, shifting carefully into a cross-legged position on the end of the hospital bed. “I mean there were doubts but…my first thought was, no not Colby. Not the guy I would trust my life too. Not my friend.” He sighed, rubbing a hand across his forehead. “It’s weird…I missed you. I mean…even when everyone was so sure…I just kept thinking…” He shrugged, “It would all just work out if I ignored it.” The mathematician leaned on his hands, watching Colby’s chest rise and fall. Assisted breathing.
“When I worked with the NSA,” Charlie started, “It was so hard. Not being able to tell anyone what I was doing…and I suck at keeping secrets. And lying. I hated the lying. I can only imagine what you’ve been going through…” Charlie glanced at the separating glass, tensed. He huffed at himself. “Guess I’m still on edge…the last time I visited someone in the hospital was kind of…eventful,” he said to Colby. Somehow speaking his thoughts was easier than retreating to the silence of them.
Don stepped back from the glass as his brother’s eyes looked that way, silently he started down the hall.
