First Date Jitters by Emma DeMarais (Challenge #29 - Beginnings)
Title: First Date Jitters
Pairing/Characters: Don/Karen
Rating/Category: PG
Spoilers: Man Hunt
Summary: Don arrives for his first date with Dr. Karen Fisher
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ
"Hi."
"Hi."
Karen nervously smoothed her dress as she stepped back for Don to enter her house.
"Come on in."
Don walked in, looking around. "Nice place."
"Well, being a doctor does have at least one advantage," she said bashfully as she closed the door behind him. "Can I get you a drink?" she asked politely.
Don looked at her closely.
"Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing's wrong," she said as she pushed her hair back behind her ear for the third time in a minute.
He laid his hands gently on her arms.
"You look really uncomfortable. Are you sure you want to do this? Because if I remind you too much of..."
"No!" she interjected. "It's not that. I just..." she flushed slightly. "I don't date often and new beginnings are always stressful. Once I get to the eating pizza in sweats while watching movies on the couch stage I'm just a normal girl. I just get jitters on the first date."
Don smiled, his eyes crinkling up at the sides.
"I tell you what. Beautiful as you look - and you do look beautiful - go upstairs and change into some sweats. We'll order a pizza and find a movie to watch on TV. How does that sound?"
"Oh, we don't have to..." She shook her head, embarrassed.
Don shrugged off his jacket and pulled off his tie.
"I like pepperoni. What do you like?" he said casually, trying to set her at ease.
"I like pepperoni too."
"That makes things easy." He rubbed her arms and she loosened up, finally smiling. "Now go get changed. I'll look to see what's on tonight."
"Thanks." She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. "I knew you were a good guy."
"You might not say that after you see me hog the remote," he joshed.
"My house, my TV!" she laughed as she headed up the stairs, kicking off her heels as she went.
"Fine!" he called after her. "Next time it's Chinese at my place where it'll be my TV!"
She stopped on the stairs and stared back at him.
"Next time, huh?" she said.
"Yeah," he said nodding. "Next time."
A delighted smile graced her face as she beamed. She headed up the stairs at a jog.
"Drinks are in the fridge! Help yourself!"
Don watched her disappear off the landing above and let out a little chuckle.
"Now that's my kind of girl."

How the heck do you do so many pairs so well?

LOL I'm a total pairing whore. I love the challenge of writing a new pairing, but past that I tend to lose interest in most of them. (I don't know if you've seen my Memories, but it's clear that almost every pairing listed has only a couple fic to it save a few major pairings like Don/Charlie or Larry/Megan.)
I have no secrets to pass on, but I do admit to shamelessly using as much canon as I can to get the characters to ring true. Karen may have been a doctor, but she had a down home sort of layer beneath that told me she's more relaxed when she's not on the clock, thus sweats and pizza.
Besides, we know Don's a good guy who tries to be helpful to others and likes hanging out around the house.
Seemed like a good match to me!
