Change in the Air
It was already late when the doorbell rang. Having an early shift, Michael was tempted to ignore whoever wanted to see him at eleven thirty at night. He rolled out of bed and tiptoed through the apartment to the end of the hallway. He peered through the spy hole and frowned at the figure standing outside. Then he unlocked the two deadbolts and opened the door.
"You have a key," he said and rubbed one foot against the ankle of the other, cursing himself for forgetting to pull on his slippers.
Don shrugged. "I wasn't sure if you wanted to see me."
"Get in here. It's cold outside." He took a step back and held the door open for his friend.
Don shrugged out of his coat. Michael couldn't help but stare. "What are you wearing?"
"A tuxedo," Don replied.
Michael snorted. "Yeah, I can see that. Why?"
"There was this function," Don said, looking down, at his watch. "I cut out early."
Michael smiled. "To come see me?"
"To be honest, I'm not sure why I came here." Don looked into Michael's eyes, unsure. "The car was in your street before I realized."
"So you thought, might as well come up?"
Don smiled and Michael couldn't help himself. He squeezed Don's neck. "I'm glad you decided to come."
Don shook his head. It wasn't that easy. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" Michael asked.
"For only coming when I need you."
Michael sighed. "You know I'm always there for you."
"That's the problem," Don said, fiercer now. He knew what he was doing to his sometimes lover by always going out with women, trying to have 'real' relationships. "You know, Alan was right. Maybe it's time to stop this farce."
"Hm?" Michael asked over his shoulder, leading the way to the living room. He gestured at the couch and went to get two beers from the fridge.
"He thinks I should do what makes me happy."
Michael nodded. "One should always do that."
"Yeah." Don twisted the cap off and took a swig. "Yeah. You're right. I don't need... Alan says he doesn't want me to try and be happy with a woman anymore."
Michael couldn't help but laugh at that one. "He said that?"
"Yeah. Said I should stick with you. And that you would one day wizen up and find someone else."
"I might," Michael said. "I'm getting older."
"Not necessarily wiser, though," Don said and held out a hand, reaching out. "You've got someone right now?"
Michael shook his head. He took the offered hand and sat down next to Don, leaning in. "So you're saying... what exactly?"
"That I want to give this a try," Don replied. "Be all serious about us."
"All serious, huh? So eloquent and romantic, Eppes. Not sure I can take that."
Don looked at Michael's grinning face. "Well, I was hoping the tux could speak for me. You know, in the romance department." He loosened the bow tie.
"It doesn't," Michael said. He tried to defuse the situation and leered. "But I could help you out of it."
Don smiled. "Yeah? Will a blowjob help my cause?"
Michael got up and tugged Don up by the cummerbund. "Won't know till you've tried," he replied.
Don halted him by putting a hand on the one tugging at him. "Michael? I'm serious about this. Trust me. Let me try."
Michael nodded. "All right."

Hah, earlier I watched last night's episode where Don's all smiling, saying he's fine or something when the others ask him what's up ... I was like, yeah, clearly that's because he's together with his man now. =p
