He asked her questions while she rocked Charlie on her lap.
“I’d walk through fire for you, Donny.”
He vroom-vroomed his truck into his tower of blocks enjoying the sharp crash it made. Charlie squealed and reached his tiny hand out.
“Why don’t you give Charlie one of your trucks?”
“He’ll drool on it,” Don protested as he built a wall. He handed it over anyway then watched as the wooden truck was promptly jammed into his little brother’s mouth.
“I’ll clean it up,” Margaret said as she took it from her son’s mouth. She zipped the truck along Charlie’s leg. Her son laughed and chased it with his eyes.
“Would you swim for me?”
“Through the deepest of oceans, baby,” she replied. Don smiled at her, all dimples before his brow furrowed in thought.
“What about fighting…fighting a monster? With big teeth that go like this?” He gnashed his teeth and roared. Charlie’s face squished at the sound, on the verge of scared tears until Don tickled his foot. He giggled and clapped his hands as Don blew a raspberry on against his belly.
“Oooh, with teeth bigger than that. And claws that move like this!” Don squealed as his mother tickled his ribs. She drew him close then kissed him on the forehead, a smile on her face as she peered over her boys to her husband.

A flutter of curls up and down as Charlie bounced on his bed.
“Through water?”
“Sure. Oceans with sharks and stuff like that.”
“Sharks. Wow. How about things that live on the moon? Would you fight them to get me?”
Don smiled, thankful his brother was being a brother. Annoying and attention seeking, that’s how he's supposed to be.
“Yeah. I’ll build a rocket and beat them up,” Don punched the air with quick jabs, right left right left as he dodged imaginary alien fists.
“What about a hole? You’d dig a hole for me if I were buried under dirt?”
“Depends on if you can hold your breath.”
Charlie stopped bouncing, the mattress still squeaking under his feet.
“Oh.”
Don shook his head before replying. “I’d dig to China if I have to. I’d grab a shovel…”
“That would take too long,” Charlie frowned as he folded his legs under him and sank onto the bed.
“Okay, one of those machines that would dig through the dirt.”
“Make sure you don’t cut me like a worm,” he wiggled his shoulders for emphasis.
“Nah, buddy. I’d be careful.”
There was the slap of the baseball against Don’s palm until Charlie broke the silence.
“If I were on the top of a tree,” Charlie questioned, “what would you do?”
Don was kind of afraid of heights so he didn’t know what he’d do. Still he smiled and said, “Climb it all the way to the top. I’d get you down.”
“Even if the top were as far away as the moon?”
“You of all people should know that’s impossible.”
Charlie shrugged. “Just wanna know,” he said, eyes soft.
“I’d get to you even if we’re old enough to have beards to our knees.”
Don sat down on the bed next to him until a tangle of arms and legs pulled him to the mattress. Charlie was warm and weighty wrapped around his body.
“I’d do the same for you, Don.”
“I know, buddy.”
**
“Aren’t we told old for this game?”
“Maybe,” Charlie rolled over onto his back.
“That’s not going to stop you.”
Thick eyebrows waggled at him.
“Okay, you start,” Don propped himself up, head supported by his hand.
“If I were trapped on a mountain, would you come and get me?”
“Hmm,” Don tried to look pensive without bursting into laughter. He traced down the center of Charlie’s chest, pausing above his navel. “I’d leave you up there so I could get your comic collection.”
“Bastard,” Charlie smacked Don’s hand off of his stomach.
“Seriously, I’d be climbing with a helmet and the pick thing.”
“You could hire a helicopter…”
A rush of words.
“The point of the game is how I’d get you…”
“It’d be faster since I’d be dead of exposure…”
“..not how you’d save your own ass.”
“…by the time you’d get there.”
They both rolled their eyes before Don took his turn.
“If I were…lost in the woods?”
“I’d narrow down your location based on statistical likelihood,” Charlie said. “Then I’d head up a massive search party before they find you dead from exposure.” He flashed Don a broad smile.
“Thanks,” Don laughed before sliding over to the pocket of warmth that was his brother. Charlie wrapped his arms around his neck and pulled him to his chest.
“If I melted into the shadows, what would you do?” Charlie whispered into Don’s hair as he stroked his back.
“I’d turn the lights on and bring you out.” He kissed his brother’s collarbone.
“You always do,” Charlie’s fingers moved to his neck and began to trace spiral patterns along the hairline.
“I try,” Don murmured against his skin before shutting his eyes.
They fell into silence as sleep overtook them.
