Title: Lost and Found
Pairing/Characters: Don Eppes/Charlie Eppes
Rating/Category: Slash/MA to be safe
Word Count:1,066
Spoilers: none
Summary:Don finds a secret Charlie has been hiding
Notes/Warnings:
Don walked into the garage and flopped down into the bean bag chair intending only to watch Charlie while he worked on something that looked vaguely computer like. He never meant for his shoulder to hit the hidden cigar box, causing it to move so that it came perilously close to falling to the floor. He certainly never meant to grab the box shake it slightly, hear the jingle/rustle from inside and let his curiosity get the better of him, causing him to open it up.
What Don found in the cigar box confounded him. As he touched each item in the box with his fingertip he felt a zing of memory travel up his arm to his brain. His finger lit on an old invitation, a skate key, the key to his Charger, the second ticket to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, his original birth certificate, one of his drivers' licenses and a few other odds and ends. He had been so lost in the memory of each item that he never saw Charlie approach and freeze in front of him.
Don finally looked up to see Charlie staring at him with fear filled eyes.
“Charlie, where did you get all of these things?”
“Don. Don, you don't understand. You were never supposed to see that. Those aren't yours anymore. Those are mine Don. Please, can I have them?” Charlie asked with a begging quality to his voice.
“Hey buddy, I recognize each of these things. They were mine at one time. They aren't of any use any more, but they were at one time. How come you took them Charlie? That's the only way you could come to have them... if you took them.”
Don flipped the lid of the cigar box closed on his finger, as if keeping his place in a book, and stood up, holding his other hand out to Charlie. He was beseeching his brother to come closer. He hadn't wanted to scare him.
Charlie held out his hand and took Don's, at the same time a huge tear rolled down one cheek and Charlie shook his head as if to negate the tear.
Don pulled Charlie closer to his body and asked, “Why?”
Charlie didn't answer, instead he buried his head in Don’s shoulder and let loose with a body-wracking sob. It came from the depths of his body and Don could feel a tremor beginning to follow on its tail.
“Hey, hey, it's going to be okay. I'm not mad here. I just want to know Charlie. It's kind of weird seeing all of these things after all of these years you know. I never knew what happened to them. C'mon.”
Don sat the cigar box down and began rubbing Charlie's back until he felt the tremors ease and the sobs abate.
Charlie pulled away and looked up at Don.
“I took them. I stole them.” His breathing hitched as he looked Don in the eyes.
Don turned Charlie and pushed on his shoulders until Charlie sat in the bean bag chair that Don had vacated. Don reached over and picked up the cigar box and sat next to Charlie. He opened the box and placed it on both of their thighs so that they could both see into the box. “Okay Charlie, tell me why you took this,” Don picked up a concert ticket for Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band “I always wondered what happened to the other ticket.”
Charlie reached for the ticket and grabbed Don's hand instead. “I took it because I didn't want you to go to that concert with Marilyn Steele. She creeped me out and she didn't wear underwear. I knew if I took one of the tickets you would think you lost it and wouldn't be able to go.” He cleared his throat and let go of Don's hand.
“Yeah, I didn't go. I had to let Marilyn go by herself because I had promised her the concert. And I knew she didn't wear underwear, that's why I asked her Charlie. It was supposed to be a sure thing for me.”
“Okay, what about this?” Don picked up the key to his old Charger and twisted it back and forth to catch the dim light in the garage.
“I took it off of your key chain because I knew it was the only one. I didn't want you going to Big Bear with Steve, Jeff, Tina, Melissa and Suzanne. I knew if you went, something would happen. One of those girls would get pregnant and I wouldn't have you anymore. So I stole your key. I knew you had the only car amongst you and I knew it cost a fortune to have a spare made. I never felt bad about it Don. I know what happened to Tina and Steve.”
Don reached over and rubbed Charlie's knee. “Okay, well, you really shot a lot of trips for me that summer. I never did have the money to get a replacement key. Charlie, are all of the things in here things you took to keep me from going someplace; to keep me close to you?”
“Yeah, each thing I took, I took in hopes of stopping you from doing something or going someplace that would take you away from me. Not everything I took worked though. You still left to join the FBI, to live in New Mexico and to do lots of other things. I still can't bear it when you're gone. I never meant for you to know Don. I could never throw any of those things away because they remind me of you. It would be like throwing you away. I can't do that.”
Don took the cigar box and closed the lid, placing it gently on the floor. He turned back to Charlie and leaned in; he looked deeply into Charlie's eyes and spoke very quietly;
“Charlie, I will never leave you again. If you'll have me, I'll stay by your side the rest of our lives.”
Charlie was speechless. All he could do was nod, then move the last inch and brush his lips over his brother's as he groaned.
“Oh yeah, Charlie. That's what I want to hear. So, can I have all of these souvenirs of my misspent youth?”
“No, they are my souvenirs Don. But you can visit them.”
