The next night, when he was offered a chance to avoid going back to an empty apartment, in favor of dinner at home with Charlie and his dad, he’d agreed immediately. Afterwards, their father had gone out to his book club, leaving them to clean up and wash the dishes. Don had barely responded to Charlie’s attempts at conversation, but Charlie didn’t seem too bothered.
Once the kitchen was set to rights, they’d settled on the couch, beers in hand and Charlie had put on the tape of Don’s favorite baseball game. During the course of the game, Charlie moved closer to Don, until they were almost touching. Don didn’t protest, liking the warmth along his side from his brother’s presence.
Sometime during the sixth inning, Don’s head came to rest on Charlie’s shoulder, and Charlie’s arm went around Don’s waist. Neither spoke, instead they absorbed each other’s presence and the warmth and comfort it provided. For the moment, it was enough.
