Title: Faith Shaken
Pairing/Characters: Colby
Rating/Category: PG
Spoilers: Judgment Call, The Janus List
Summary: Colby questions his obedience as the walls close in on him
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ
The cell was dank, concrete cold, and the chill sank into Colby's flesh through the coarse prison issue garb he'd seen on hundreds of criminals but never imagined he'd wind up in himself.
He shivered, more out of apprehension and uncertainty than cold, and fought down yet another wave of claustrophobia. He'd been in tinier foxholes, but at least those he could leave - well if he wanted to get perforated with bullet holes he could, but somehow just having the option made all the difference.
Options.
He'd never considered them before. He was raised to follow orders and he'd followed them: his father's, his drill sergeant's, his C.O.'s, his government's.
He'd been ordered to spy, to go undercover, deep undercover.
He'd put his faith in those who he served in serving his country.
For the first time in his life, he was starting to doubt the wisdom of obedience.

Date: 2007-09-24 10:54 am (UTC)I like this, though. I think my - dislike is too strong a word - non-sympathy for Colby is well known. But every soldier comes to question obedience eventually. And I think that's generally a good thing. It's what keeps us strong, challenging those in power.

Questioning obedience/authority is healthy. Chaos is not. It's finding the ideal space between that's key.

Date: 2007-09-24 08:09 pm (UTC)I do like Colby as a character, and like the fact that he's questioning orders.
And I missed the Confession post as well :) You are not verbose!!

Date: 2007-10-07 09:01 am (UTC)I'm glad you're almost to the end of S2. Charlie's hair is *much* improved in S3. ;-) S3 also has Dark!Don and bonus Edgerton so it's cool. JL is a great finale even if it was a cliffhanger for the first time.
I've gotten dissed for the Confession posts in the past, but it's nice to know at least one or two people read them and notice if they go missing. Thanks for that...

Date: 2007-10-07 09:14 am (UTC)Colby's had a rough go of things. He didn't ask for this assignment - he just fell into it when Dwayne approached him and he was put in a unique position to ferret out the mole. (And how funny is it that those are both animals? LOL!) Don's right in that he can probably get his pick of cherry assignments after almost getting himself *killed* just to follow Dwayne until he led him to the traitor. But he won't go. I'm not sure what reason he'll give for staying, but Dylan's contracted for S4 so Colby's not going anywhere. Hee!
(But wouldn't it be insane if they made him Don's *boss* for his promotion? ROFL!)
