Table
They were wrestling on the couch when Colby got his knee a little bit too close to Don’s goods. Don automatically did a little twist-shove move to protect himself, and ended up propelling Colby off the couch. He landed with ‘thunk’ on the coffee table, which gave an ominous groan just before it buckled under Colby’s weight and the force with which Don had thrown him.
Don rolled off the couch and knelt beside Colby. “Jesus, Colby, are you all right?”
It took a moment for Colby to catch his breath. “I think we’re gonna need a new coffee table.”
Mug
Don had a large coffee mug at work that Colby had presented to him as a joke. It was black and said ‘Boss’ in silver lettering. He used the mug everyday, merely smiling when Megan grinned and teased him about not taking it too seriously, or when David accused Colby of sucking up.
Don would glance at Colby when no one else was looking, and smile at him over the edge of the mug as he took a sip. They both knew that the joke was on their teammates, because Don had a matching mug at home that said, ‘Lover.’
Stirrer
Don didn’t do it on purpose. It was just habit. He mixed his coffee, and then he stuck the stirrer in his mouth. Sometimes he merely sucked the coffee off it, other times he chewed on it like he’d chewed on his pen caps in college.
He didn’t even realize he was doing it, until he’d glance up to find Colby staring at his mouth.
And then, Don had to admit, he made a production out of it, because he couldn’t resist the reaction it got, and the promise in Colby’s eyes that made Don wish they were home already.
